Underwater Wedding Photography

Time for something a little bit different on the blog – my first attempt at underwater wedding photography! This is from a day after shoot in Mexico, from Dan and Victoria’s Azul Beach Hotel wedding. If you don’t follow me on instagram you may not have seen these photos. So I thought it was time to show them the light of day.

As I mentioned this was my first attempt. I’ll be honest, I don’t often get asked to photograph couples in the sea but I am always up for a challenge! I borrowed a relatively inexpensive DicaPac from a friend after searching for a DSLR camera case. I have to admit, for the price point it was a steal! Buying a hard case for a DSLR is pretty expensive and for a one time use not really feasible. Therefore I needed up putting my £4K camera in to a pimped out plastic bag for the job and it worked well. I tentatively tested it out beforehand to made sure the bag was sealed and ready to roll in the sea.

The downsides of using this underwater camera bag for photography is that it is very difficult to change the settings. You really have to dial in your settings before getting in the water and there is a certain amount of spray and pray. Victoria and Dan were amazing to work with and very patient! The only other downside is that you have to physically hold the camera lens right up against the glass opening. I found that the Dicapac case is designed to fit large lenses and so it doesn’t lend itself all that well to smaller lenses.

Water Clarity

As any diver will know water clarity is everything! The water clarity wasn’t great for us but it didn’t get in the way of some pretty awesome photos. I don’t know when, if ever, another opportunity will come along to do under water wedding photography but I’d love to give it another go. As I’m doing quite a bit of destination wedding photography this year maybe this post will wet the appetite! Lastly, I really hope you enjoy these photos and hopefully it’ll be a fun little snippet and something a little different.
